Object Description
Mit dem aus dem Meer aufsteigenden Viergespann des Sonnengottes Helios begann die Reihe der Metopenbilder auf der Nordseite des Tempels für die Stadtgöttin Athena in Ilion, dem mythischen Troja. Wie am Parthenon in Athen folgten vielleicht Darstellungen der Kämpfe um Troja und die Mondgöttin Selene bildete den Abschluß.

The row of sculpted metopes on the north side of the temple to the goddess of the city of Ilion, Athena, began with an image of the sun god’s quadriga rising out of the sea. Like the Parthenon in Athens, the row perhaps continued with depictions of the battles for Troy and ended the moon goddess, Selene.
