Girolamo Romanino war einer der bedeutendsten Akteure des italienischen Cinquecento. Er stammte aus der damals zur Republik von Venedig gehörenden Stadt Brescia. Die Beziehungen zur Malerei eines Titians sind auffällig (Bild gleichen Themas in der Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rom). Als spezifisch für Romanino gilt der dramatische Abschnitt rechts im Bild, der den Kopf des Henkers im Schatten zeigt – eine wahre Vorwegnahme Caravaggios.

Girolamo Romanino, one of the most important painters of the Italian 16th century, was a native of Brescia, a town in Eastern Lombardy, which at the time belonged to the Republic of Venice. Analogies with Titian’s work are obvious and reflected in the iconography (see a similar work of the same subject in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome). However the dramatic light effects on the the right hand side of the picture that conceal the head of the executioner in shadow are unique to Romanino. A true anticipation of Caravaggio.
