The portrait, which was probably painted immediately after Dürer’s return from Venice in 1507, depicts a young woman dressed in the German manner. The beret worn with a slight tilt gives her a cheeky expression. The limitation of the colours of clothing to strawberry red and an intense green, which form a effective contrast to the tones of the skin and hair, lend this picture a particular charm. The jewellery on the beret, consisting of a ruby and pearl, signify wealth and a high social rank; the uncovered hair shows the status of the girl as an unmarried virgin. As there is no specific reference to the identity of the girl portrayed, the question has been raised of whether this may be not a portrayal of an actual person but an imagined head, a study of a type. However, both the expression and the features of this rather broad face seem rather to suggest that it is a portrait of a real young woman.| Prestel Museum Guides – Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017
